Food Safety News explains:
“Listeria can cause a serious, life-threatening illness. Symptoms of listeriosis include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, muscle aches, and nausea, sometimes diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.”
It was reported by the CDC officials that they have started an investigation the outbreak which took place in 6 states in September 2015. Yet, it is still unclear why they make this announcement only now.
Although people were warned to avoid these salads, if they reported this earlier, they may have prevented numerous consequences of this outbreak.
The official statement claims that the consumption of Dole salads has caused a listeria outbreak in 6 stated, and as many as 11 hospitalized patients, including a 3- old child and a pregnant woman, and 1 dead.
These salads were packaged in Springfield, OH, and caused these issues in patients from Michigan, New Jersey, Indiana, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and New York.
Although they are expecting new laboratory results to confirm, apparently, there has been a link between this listeria outbreak and the one reported by the Public Health Agency of Canada, where another listeria outbreak led to seven hospitalized patients from 5 provinces.
Consequently, Dole Food Co. has noncompulsory removed their salads from the market in three Canadian provinces and twenty- three states. There was a report published on the website of the Food and Drug Administrations, the lettuce should be removed from the salads (labeled with an ‘A’ code) sold in grocery stores and people should not consume them.
The statement of Dole also suggested that salads were no longer produced at the processing facility in Springfield. We honestly hope that this is true.
